If keys on a Chromebook keyboard appear to not be working, this could be due to a hardware issue or a mechanical issue.
Hardware Troubleshooting
If pressing on key(s) does not trigger a digital response on screen, please try the following:
- Restart the device: Turn your Chromebook completely off and back on to clear out temporary software glitches.
- Check accessibility settings: Go to Settings > Accessibility and ensure features like Sticky keys or Slow keys are turned off. Learn more about keyboard and text input accessibility features here.
- Clean the keyboard: Use a can of compressed air to blow out dust, dirt, or crumbs trapped beneath the non-working keys.
Mechanical Issues
Physical damage can result in mechanical issues such as the following:
- A key might pop off the keyboard track and can't be snapped back in place
- Liquid damage from an accidental spill on keyboard
- Accidental exterior damage from dropping, stepping or sitting on device
